CHAPTER TWELVE

While Anna cleared lunch from the table, Tori and Juniper followed Desmond back into the front parlor. “I really hope the person who tried to kill my godmother doesn’t make another attempt.”

“Hmm… I think Juniper can take care of herself. I mean, she managed to dodge the last attempt pretty easily.”

“Ha! Unlucky for you, though. But I still don’t think it was one of my guests. I hope you’re looking into the people we hired as well,” Juniper said. “And now we have the strange ring lady to investigate too.”

Desmond frowned and pointed at the guest list. “Are you saying you won’t even try to connect any of the names on this list with what happened? Surely there are any number of people who came to your dinner who don’t actually like you, Ms. Holiday. Those people might have a motive, unlike some stranger who gave you a ring.”

Juniper did a double take and actually looked affronted.

“Excuse me? I’ll bet there are more on there that don’t like you, Mr. Waddlebutt. But—” She held up her hand. “In the interest of fairness, I will tell you what Tori thinks. Well, maybe not what she really thinks, but it’s at least what she said.”

When she fell silent, her look expectant, Desmond threw out both his hands. “Well? Please, enlighten me, Ms. Holiday. What did your goddaughter say?”

Juniper laughed at his obvious exasperation then waved a hand to dismiss it all. “Oh, the enlightenment part already happened. You’re gonna have to get used to living with ghosts now.”

His expression closed. “The other part. Your goddaughter. What did she have to say?”

“Oh, that.” Juniper flopped down onto the sofa and picked up a magazine. “She said it was probably Beatrice Miller who tried to kill me. Said the woman hates all the noise and to-do up here at the mansion. And that’s something you should know already, too, since she calls the cops on us almost every night.”

Desmond’s brow lowered. “And was she a guest at your dinner?”

“Sure she was. She’s practically our next-door neighbor, Desi-D. We couldn’t exactly ignore her, now, could we? Especially after all the time and effort she puts into harassing us.” Juniper snorted. “The woman is harmless, Dez. Just a sad, pruny old giver-upper. Her life ended a long time ago, and she’s too bitter to try and do anything to change it—so she gets her thrills by bugging Tori and me over the music and the events I hold here.”

“I see.” Desmond put a mark beside the woman’s name anyway, and Juniper snorted again. “Gonna check her out because Toribell said it, are ya? I get it. I see where your loyalties lie now.”

“I’m going to speak with her, yes, but mostly because you want to overlook her,” Desmond said while pointing at her with the rolled-up guest list papers. “In the meantime, you can forget any amateur investigating ideas you have.”

Juniper crossed her arms over her chest. “I’m no amateur, Quackers. I’m gonna go upstairs to my office and work on my Christmas wingding.
